Big Ideas: Effective Communication & Conflict Resolution Skills

Introduction

Communication and conflict resolution skills aren’t something that only certain individuals should be knowledgeable about, both are great skills that everyone should be educated on. Learning about these skills early on can benefit you throughout your whole life. It is important for you to understand effective communication skills as well as conflict resolution skills. There are three essential questions that students should understand by the end of this project. How will communicating effectively help reduce health risks? Why does asking for assistance enhance health for self and others? Why does non-violent strategies help with conflict resolution?

Task

The CEO of TeensHealth is looking to promote effective communication and conflict resolution through a form of a video that can be used as an educational tool. As a team of health professionals, it's your job to create an educational video about conflict resolution to present to the CEO of TeensHealth. The video should include one ineffective way to resolve conflict and explain why this isn't an effective way, then follow it with three ways to effectively resolve conflict. The CEO is looking for a video that demonstrates conflict resolution skills using effective communication skills and nonviolent strategies, while keeping your audience engaged. If your video is selected by the CEO of TeensHealth, your team will present your video live on a TedTalk before the video is released to the public on TeensHealth's website. In addition, your team will be given the opportunity to create more educational videos to be posted on the TeensHealth's website.

Conclusion

(Tie everything the participants have done back to the Goal. Why did they go through all of this? Tie the scenario to the real world. Remind them of the "Big Idea" that they were supposed to gain from this, just in case they didn't make the connection on their own. Don't get preachy. If you ask a question here, it has to be rhetorical. No work or assignments should be included. Short is good.)

Hopefully, after completing this project, students will feel more comfortable to express themselves through effective communication rather than conflict. In doing so, they will increase their self-efficacy and knowledge about why nonviolent strategies can help with conflict resolution skills, as well as reduce other potential health risks. Continuing to practice effective communication and conflict resolution skills can help you enhance your relationships, and mental and emotional health.
